WHAT IS KHANACROSS?

A Khanacross is a bigger and faster version of a Motorkhana in some ways, and like a small Rallysprint in others. It is a timed event held on an unsealed circuit (at VMCi, we like dirt) up to 1.5 kilometres long. Like a motorkhana, there is a start and finish garage where participants begin and conclude their attempt at an event.

 

On any given day at a Khanacross, you will compete in 5 or 6 events, all of them differing in length, shape, direction and/or laps. You will learn how your car corners, accelerates and brakes all at manageable speeds on a marked out track. Straight sections of track are kept to a minimum to keep terminal speeds down.

 

Cars race around the track one at a time, meaning you can take your time, or put pedal to the metal (where appropriate). All your times for each event are added together and the winner is the person taking the least amount of time. Results are also broken down into different categories, like class of car, engine size, juniors, etc.

 

Khanacross is a grass roots sport that is really only offered by car clubs like the VMCi. It’s a fabulous introduction for drivers to drive quickly on dirt and a teaser for those who may wish to try their hand at rallying. This form of motorsport is the next step up from a Motorkhana and is fun for all the family.

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO A KHANACROSS?

A car – any car will do. Your Mini, Moke, everyday vehicle, purpose-built vehicle or paddock basher (provided it's safe to drive). Cars are subject to scrutineering by competition officials before each competition. This is to make sure that the car is safe to compete in.

You'll also need a helmet – at the VMCi we try to have spare helmets available for club members who don’t own them.

 

DO I NEED A LICENCE?

You don't need a regular driver's licence to compete, but you will need a Motorsport Australia licence in order to compete. This can be obtained by completing the licence application form found here.  The cost is $145 for Adults or $35 for juniors aged 12-17 years, and the licence will last for 12 months. Alternatively, you can sign up at most VMCi run events - just give the organiser of the event a call to check that sign up will be available on site.
